Trying to find a car that is good for the environment is a difficult task. Especially if you have a family of five. I have been doing some research and the choices are quite pathetic. My husband and I have talked about converting a car to vegetable oil; however, we just found out that it is illegal, and it isn’t as green as people may think. So at this point we have put that idea on hold. The next thought is a hybrid car. Hybrids do get much better gas mileage and are better for the environment. However, there aren’t many choices out there especially for a bigger family. Now, Japan has a hybrid minivan since 2001; however, we still do not have one in the United States. The hybrid SUV’s we have in the United States still do not get the gas mileage that they should. The Saturn Vue Green Line gets 32 on the highway which is decent; however, if people in Japan have been driving around in hybrid minivans since 2001, what is the problem here? Do you think we might still be addicted to oil?

My husband was telling me how a co-worker of his heard on the radio about a church that is giving out gas cards because the churchgoers drive to church. Is that the way to end our gas addiction–help pay for it?

Well, we will keep searching. I would love it if we could be in a more walkable area and have only one car. You have to do what you can though.

Planet Green

I am excited about this launch for the new television network “Planet Green“. The network will be launching on June 4th. I am looking forward to watching the shows, but I don’t need any more excuses to sit on my hind end and watch television. I have enjoyed the preview shows I have seen so far, such as Wasted and Greenovate and have gained more information from watching them.

If the shows help people be more educated about green options and how to take better care of the environment–great! I know so many people have the knowledge to make better choices; however, when it comes down to making the change, convenience takes over. I have to fight my laziness all the time. Is it easier to through something in the garbage or rinse it out and put it in the recycle bin? Do I forget to bring my reuseable bags to the farmer’s market or store sometimes? Yep!

Being greener every day takes making different choices and getting out of our comfort zone time and time again. Check out the new station when you get a chance and make a simple green change this week.

Disposable Choices

Once again, I watched the tv show Wasted that has the host find environmental criminals, well, people who are hurting the environment by their habits. This time it was a family of four who ate on styrofoam (polysterine) plates, cups, bowls EVERYDAY and Every meal. Can you imagine how much waste they produced? They also washed about 15 loads of laundry a week in a huge water-consuming top loader washing machine. I have a family of five and the most I wash in a week is 4 - 5 loads, and thankfully, I now have a very energy efficient, water conserving washer.

With the family addicted to disposable products in the back of my mind, I set off to the store to buy some plates for a jewelry party I am having tomorrow night. I stood in the aisle looking at the choices. There were biodegradable bowls, which I wanted to use, however, I needed plates. Basically I was left with recycled plastic plates and “silver” ware made out of corn. These are much better choices than styrofoam which lets off acetone when burned; however, I would have been happier with biodegradable plates if they were available. I thought about having everyone put their food in their hands but that could be a bit rude. Using my everyday plates and then washing them a few times would actually use up precious water. The biodegradable plates, if I were to find any, would be the most environmentally-friendly. They would decompose and wouldn’t need water. So I picked the lesser of two evils, recycled plastic ware over re-washing dishes in a dry area.

Dry Cleaning

I was watching a new “green” show on tv the other day called “Waste” I believe. Anyway, in this show they were visiting two guys and trying to decrease their ecological footprint. One of the guys spent an amazing amount on dry cleaning. His dry cleaner was not a green dry cleaner, in other words, his dry cleaner was using perchloroethylene which is a chemical that is a hazardous air pollutant. The horrible chemicals that are being used is bad enough, but what I never thought about before was all of the waste. The amount of plastic used in covering the hangers, and the amount of hangers used just sits in a landfill somewhere if it is not recycled. According to the Hanger Network 3.5 billion wire hangers go into the landfill.

Most of the time when I research environmental waste, I am disturbed about how much my waste has gone into the landfill. I haven’t used much dry cleaning so this one isn’t hitting me directly between the eyes. I now know, however, just using it even infrequently is too much. Next time I need my clothes dry cleaned I will search for a green dry cleaner who recycles their hangers or uses biodegradable hangers. I have purchased a great washing machine that has a steam setting. I try to use that as much as possible. Greener Choices has a great article on dry cleaning alternatives
